IPBES-6 Plenary

Medellin, Colombia, from 18 to 24 March 2018

The sixth Plenary of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) will take place in Medellin, Colombia, from 18 to 24 March 2018.

The Plenary will discuss, amongst others:

  • the election of members of the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel

  • pending assessments (thematic assessment of the sustainable use of wild species; methodological assessment regarding the diverse conceptualisation of multiple values of nature and its benefits; and thematic assessment of invasive alien species)

  • financial and budgetary arrangements

  • review of the Platform

  • the development of a second work programme

The Plenary is also expected to adopt:

  • The regional and subregional assessments of biodiversity and ecosystem services for Africa; the Americas; Asia and the Pacific; and for Europe and Central Asia.
  • The thematic assessment of land degradation and restoration.
  • The adoption of the assessments and their Summary for Policymakers constitutes a very important step since the establishment of the Platform some five years ago

Six 'primers' were released in October last year. These are short briefing documents that provide key information about each of the assessments that members will consider for approval at the sixth session of the IPBES Plenary. There are six primers in total – one each for the four regional assessments, one for the assessment of land degradation and restoration, as well as a sixth general primer with information about all of the assessments as a whole.
