Online database of Afrotropical moth species

In collaboration with Dr. Jurate De Prins(RMCA) and Dr. Willy De Prins(University of Amsterdam) the Platform has launched a new website.

It provides an online database of the Afrotropical moth species (Lepidoptera), updated with the latest information obtained from published sources and from our own studies. It currently holds information on

  • family-group names: 575
  • genus-group names: 7,025 (recognized genera: 3,953)
  • species-group names: 31,659 (recognized species: 23,567)

The current list is continuously updated and information on the original description, type locality, types and their depository, distribution and foodplants is added at a regular basis. In a later stage also pictures will be added.

The website provides information on:

  • the current taxonomic status of every Afrotropical moth family, genus and species
  • bibliographical reference to the original description
  • synonyms of families, genera and species
  • type genera of families
  • type species of genera
  • type locality of species
  • information on type specimens and their depository
  • geographical distribution (country names)
  • larval host plant(s)
