The most comprehensive and authoritative global index of species.
Catalogue of Life
The Catalogue of Life is a global partnership resulting in the most comprehensive and authoritative global index of species currently available.
It consists of three key features:
- Species Checklist which identifies those names which are accepted by authoritative specialists in the groups concerned.
- Management Classification providing an integrated, hierarchical view of relationships between taxa.
- Integration of Global Species Databases employing a radical architecture of federating global taxonomic expert knowledge, which is embodied by a growing array of supplier databases, and integrating these into a single catalogue.
The Catalogue holds essential information on the names, relationships and distributions of over 1.6 million species. The information is compiled from diverse sources around the world (e.g. GBIF, EoL, IUCN, LifeWatch,...).
