Policy-makers call on scientific expertise in order to make well-informed decisions pertaining to biodiversity and sustainable development. Reciprocally, scientists need to ensure societal relevance of their research projects.

To facilitate dialogue between decisions makers and scientists, science-policy initiatives create opportunities for exchanging views and concerns, and facilitate prioritizing options in line with the needs of both communities. The Belgian Biodiversity Platform is a science-policy body that plays this role, in a neutral and interest-free manner, through a variety of means and at different levels:
